چکیده

TheDNAsequenceof the coding regionof thewild-type andmutant alleles of thewhite eyegene fromthemelonßy,Bactrocera cucurbitaeCoquillett, wasobtained.Themutantwhite eyeallele had a single base pair mutation at the 5 end of intron 4b in the RNA splice recognition site. Due to the disrupted splice recognition site, intron 4bwas not removed from themutant RNA transcript. The resulting mRNA transcript was 68 bp longer than that of the wild type, containing a frameshift and premature stop codon. Transport of pigment precursors would be blocked, resulting in a lack of pigmentation deposition consistent with the known mutant phenotype.

Field captures of wild melon fly (Diptera: Tephritidae) with an improved male attractant, raspberry ketone formate.

Field-trapping evaluations of the new male attractant, formic acid 4-(3-oxobutyl) phenyl ester (raspberry ketone formate [RKF]) were conducted in Hawaii with wild populations of melon flies, Bactrocera cucurbitae Coquillett (Diptera: Tephritidae), to determine its activity in the field and to evaluate new plastic matrix formulations. All tests were compared with the standard melon fly attractan...

Development of a Pupal Color-Based Genetic Sexing Strain of the Melon Fly, Bactrocera cucurbitae (Coquillett) (Diptera: Tephritidae)

The Þrst genetic sexing system for the melon ßy, Bactrocera cucurbitae (Coquillett), based on pupal color was developed. The recessive white pupae mutant, wh, was used in a putative chromosome translocation linking the wildtype allele to the male sex. This system permits the separation of males (wildtype brown pupae) from females (mutant white pupae). Results from laboratory studies indicated t...

Haq et al.: Suppression of Remating of Bactrocera cucurbitae Females 839 ABILITY OF GENETIC SEXING STRAIN MALE MELON FLIES (DIPTERA: TEPHRITIDAE) TO SUPPRESS WILD FEMALE REMATING: IMPLICATIONS FOR SIT

For successful application of the sterile insect technique (SIT), wild female insects should not be more receptive to remating after mating with a mass-reared sterile male than after to mating with a wild fertile male. The remating frequencies of melon fly Bactrocera cucurbitae Coquillett (Diptera: Tephritidae) females were assessed in field cages with male melon flies from: (1) a male-only gen...
